Responsibilities: Assist in the maintenance of two of the Chicago Botanic Garden's natural areas: a 15-acre developing created prairie (exhibits six different types of prairie communities found in northeastern Illinois) and a mile-long urban river reach with an adjoining 22 acres of developing wetlands, prairie, and savanna. This position involves physically demanding work for extended periods of time. Typical work responsibilities include removal of weedy/invasive plants (including herbicide application) on land and from the water, planting, seed collection and cleaning, seed sowing, mowing and removing debris, tree cutting and removal, burn break preparation, participation in prescribed burns, path maintenance and other related activities. Operation of small gas-powered equipment and use of hand tools is required. Duties also include caring for equipment and vehicles, data entry, record keeping, and miscellaneous office work. Some knowledge of local flora required.
Bachelor's degree in restoration ecology or closely related field and experience in restoration management. Some knowledge of local flora. A proven strong work ethic. Ability to function well in both team and individual work situations. A willingness to take the Illinois Pesticide exam and the Chicago Wilderness Fire Training. Ability to work outside in inclement weather (mosquitoes, bees, rain, allergens) for long periods of time doing physically demanding work. Ability to lift and carry 35 lbs. for extended periods of time. The 2017 employment term for these positions begins in April/May and continues through late November The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:30am - 4 pm. Paid holidays and one personal day per four months of employment are provided; health insurance benefits may be available for employees scheduled to work longer than six months. Pay is $13/hour.
